Ask Your PDF Without Uploading It: HugPDF AI
You have a long contract and one short question: when does the cancellation period end? Asking AI sounds convenient, but sending the entire contract to another service may be a step you would rather avoid.
HugPDF Ask Your PDF is an experimental local AI tool. Select a document, inspect extracted text and ask a model running on your device about short excerpts. Your PDF is not uploaded to a server to generate the answer.

A focused question is easier to check
You may need one date, one requirement or the main points of a particular section rather than a summary of an entire document. Start with that small task. The current tool selects up to three short text excerpts for each question and displays them alongside the generated answer.
This makes review concrete: compare the response with its actual context, then inspect the original PDF page. A fluent answer is a starting point for checking, not evidence that the model understood the whole document.
Model downloads are different from document uploads
First, the browser downloads runtime and model files from external providers. This requires an internet connection and may involve hundreds of megabytes. Document selection stays disabled until loading completes and two basic startup questions pass.
Text extraction, excerpt selection and answer generation then run locally. The generation worker is programmed to block new network requests after loading. There is no automatic cloud fallback. Model files may be cached; document text and questions are not saved to that model cache.
This does not mean every page on the website makes zero network requests, or establish legal compliance. Follow workplace rules for confidential material and read our Privacy Policy.
Try it in five steps
- Use a suitable computer. WebGPU and sufficient memory are required. Passing the compatibility check does not guarantee model loading will succeed.
- Agree to download the model. Prefer Wi-Fi. Basic English and Arabic questions run locally before document selection is enabled. Passing these checks is not an accuracy guarantee.
- Select a PDF and its pages. Current limits are 50 MiB per file and up to 20 selected pages, for example
1-5, 8. - Extract and inspect the text. Fix missing or unreadable text before asking questions.
- Ask briefly and verify. Compare the answer with displayed excerpts and the original. Stop and clear the session when finished.
Three prompts worth trying
These are suggested prompts, not promised model outputs:
- “What cancellation deadline appears in these excerpts? Cite the page, or say it is not stated.”
- “List the application steps in the displayed excerpts. Cite a page for each step.”
- “Summarize these excerpts in three points without adding outside information.”
Questions are limited to 400 UTF-8 bytes. Shorten your question if the tool flags its length. Each question is independent; the tool does not maintain a continuing conversation.
A citation is a place to look, not proof
Imagine a teaching example where page three says, “Send cancellation requests before October 15, 2026.” Check that sentence appears in the displayed context. If the model supplies another date, the original remains your reference. If the relevant sentence is absent, change the page selection or question.
A marker such as [PAGE 3] refers to the page position in the PDF, which may differ from printed numbering. The tool flags references outside the supplied context, but cannot prove that each claim is supported by a cited page.
When another tool should come first
- Image-only scans: this model reads text and performs no OCR here. Try OCR PDF and inspect its output.
- Financial calculations: use PDF to Excel and verify rows, columns and amounts. Ask Your PDF does not accept Excel workbooks or guarantee calculations.
- Large, unrelated sections: select only relevant pages, or use Extract PDF Pages while retaining necessary context.
- Preparation without a model download: AI Ready prepares local text and prompts. Sharing those outputs with a cloud service later is a separate action.
What experimental means here
The small model can invent information and struggle with Arabic or complex questions. Excerpt retrieval uses word matching and can miss relevant paragraphs phrased differently. Summaries cover displayed excerpts, not all selected pages.
Extraction components and the network-blocking logic have programmatic tests. Actual GPU model inference has not yet been verified in the current development environment. We do not publish an accuracy percentage or promise support for every device. Startup questions do not replace testing with real documents.
Try a local-processing check yourself
Use a non-sensitive PDF with known content. Load the model and extraction engine, extract text, disconnect the internet and ask a question. An answer demonstrates that this task can run locally in that session. Technical users can also inspect browser network activity during generation. One check does not prove every security property, and reopening the page offline depends on available cached resources.
Ask about the smallest useful piece of text, then check the source. Read our review of AI document-accuracy research or try Ask Your PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ask Your PDF actual AI?
The integration uses a small Qwen2.5 model through WebLLM to generate answers locally on compatible devices. Actual GPU inference still requires verification, so the tool is experimental.
Must I upload my PDF to another service?
No. Model downloads contact external providers, but document text and questions are not sent to a server for answer generation.
Does it summarize the whole document?
No. It extracts up to 20 selected pages and uses up to three short excerpts per question. Summaries cover displayed excerpts only.
Can I ask about Arabic PDFs or scans?
You can ask in Arabic about extractable text, with possible extraction and response errors. The tool does not read images or perform OCR itself.
Can I rely on it for contracts or calculations?
Use it for preliminary assistance and check the original. It does not guarantee correct deadlines or calculations and does not replace professional review.
