A Resume Is More Than a Task List: Make Your Experience Clear

You find a relevant vacancy, but your resume is split between an old document and notes on your phone. Start with the facts that help an employer understand your contribution. This guide walks through creating a resume PDF and editable Word file with HugPDF, while keeping your resume data on your device.

Build your free resume

Start with the role, not the template

Keep a copy of the job description. Identify the responsibilities and skills you can support with real evidence, then select relevant experience. For an operations role, scheduling work and following up deliveries may matter more than a long list of unrelated courses. A target-role headline should express your goal honestly, not imply a position you never held.

Prepare your contact information, education, employment dates, projects and skills. Check dates before entering them; overlapping jobs should not be counted twice when calculating total experience.

What to put on a student resume with no work experience

Use relevant education, coursework projects, internships or volunteering. Explain the problem, your individual contribution and what you delivered. Label university projects accurately rather than presenting them as employment.

Fictional example: instead of “Participated in a final-year project,” write “Organized the team’s project schedule, followed up deadlines and maintained the task-status log.” Use this wording only if it reflects your actual work.

Select Student / graduate in HugPDF to start with education and projects before employment. You can reorder or hide sections. Empty sections are omitted from the output.

For experienced professionals, show the work behind the title

“Responsible for sales and operations” says little about scope. Describe the activity, the action you took and an outcome you can support. Use a number when you have a reliable record and can explain the period and context. Otherwise, describe the actual deliverable without inventing growth percentages.

Fictional example: “Followed up supplier quotations and prepared a comparison of costs and delivery periods to support purchasing decisions.” This is more specific than “Excellent procurement skills,” but it belongs on your resume only if you performed that work.

Choose Experienced professional to put work experience and skills first. Remove repetition across the summary, skills and employment descriptions.

How to create and download your resume

  1. Open the resume builder. Choose the document language and Classic or Modern design. Changing the document language changes headings and direction; it does not translate your writing.
  2. Add your name, headline and contact details. Use one contact item per line. Include a working email and telephone number, and leave out personal information that the application does not need.
  3. Enter education, experience and projects. Add titles, organizations and dates. Write each achievement on its own line. The professional summary is optional.
  4. Review section order. Lead with relevant evidence and hide sections that add little. List skills you can demonstrate or discuss.
  5. Generate the preview and downloads. Review every page, then open or download the PDF, or download editable Word. Regenerate after editing so the downloads contain your latest changes.

PDF or Word? Follow the application instructions

Use the format the employer requests. HugPDF exports a selectable-text PDF and a Word document with editable paragraphs. Word pagination may change with the installed fonts or application, so do not assume the two files have identical page breaks.

The builder uses a single-column layout without a photograph or skill-rating graphics. That is a readability choice, not a guarantee of passing an applicant tracking system (ATS) or securing an interview. Check that you can select and copy the PDF text and review the application portal’s preview when available.

Your resume data and local drafts

Document generation runs locally in your browser without uploading resume content to a processing server. The page, libraries and fonts still need to load from the site. Offline availability depends on which resources your browser has cached.

Saving is optional. Save a draft on the device or download a JSON backup to reopen in HugPDF. JSON is an editable tool backup, not the resume to send an employer. Use the dedicated button to delete a saved draft, avoid storing personal information on shared computers and keep a backup if you need future access.

Before you send it

The tool supports up to 8 PDF pages and 12 entries each for experience, education and projects. These are technical limits, not recommended resume lengths. If separately requested, combine certificate attachments with Merge PDF. If a file exceeds the recipient’s limit, try PDF compression on a copy and inspect the text afterwards. Keep attachments separate when the application requires separate files.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create a free resume without an account?

Yes. HugPDF lets you write, preview and download PDF and Word without signing up. Saving a local draft is optional.

Can I build an Arabic resume?

Yes. Choose Arabic as the document language for Arabic headings and right-to-left layout. Enter Arabic content yourself; changing the language does not translate it.

What can I include without work experience?

Use relevant education, projects, internships or volunteering, explaining your actual role and deliverables. Do not invent employment or metrics.

Does the builder guarantee an ATS pass?

No. It provides a clear single-column layout and selectable-text PDF, but parsing and selection vary by employer. Follow the requested submission format.

Is my resume uploaded to a server?

Resume content is not uploaded for document generation. Export happens locally in the browser, and drafts are saved on the device only when requested.
