How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Clear page numbers make long reports, applications and scanned files easier to review, reference and print.

Plan numbering before you start

Decide whether the cover should be numbered, where numbers should appear and whether numbering must start at 1 or continue from another document.

Add the numbers

  1. Open Add Page Numbers.
  2. Select the PDF and choose the pages to number.
  3. Set the position, alignment and starting number.
  4. Choose a simple format, then create the result.
  5. Check that numbers do not cover footnotes, stamps or signatures.

Documents with a cover page

You can leave a cover unnumbered by starting the selected range on page 2, then display 1 on that page. This is useful for reports and assignments.

Review before printing

Inspect pages with narrow margins and pages that already contain footer text. Keep enough space around the number so it remains readable when printed.
